What do women really think of me? What do they talk about when men aren't around? What about men, what do they talk about?

A tad pretentious, but works in the end. - estefan
Occasionally interesting and sometimes almost pretentious, Denys Arcand's The Decline of the American Empire does succeed at times because of the wide ensemble of odd-ball characters. Though, Arcand will insert some annoying, analytical bull into the character's mouth, he at least doesn't go over-board with it. He even pokes fun at the whole idea of the film with a character (obviously meant to represent the audience) complains that they all talk too much about things and don't do them. The film also has a darkly comic sense of humour that helps elevate it when the film starts to slow down. Overall, while not as good as its sequel The Barbarian Invasions, there's enough in this to make a decent picture.Classique - Louby
... need I say more? OK, more than navels, but still. Americans will love this movie. It lives up to their stereotypes of the French. With no clear goals, obviously beaten up by a predominantly Anglo American culture, Quebecois academics explore the only remaining territory that the others don't have the courage to handle - sex. The protagonist is a sex addict who manages to destroy his wife and several others. Fortunately, this is a Quebec film, so he remains a hero.
