While I didn't hate this quite as much as Roger Ebert infamously did ...
Ebert wrote: "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it."
... I can certainly understand where he's coming from.
As a kids movie, this fails to have a clear lesson. It teaches simply that your parents are right for you, because they're your parents. Umm. Okay. Talk about an oversimplification.
North does go on an adventure to find new parents, but it's not a particularly compelling one, that kids are likely to enjoy, or find fun or funny.
The humour of his journey is adult, and not all that funny, but the premise is that of a kid's movie. There were some cute moments, but this really doesn't work.
This uses as many stereotypes as it can possibly cram in. The Alaskan couple live in an igloo. The Hawaiian couple welcome him with belly dancers. In Africa, it's a tribe with topless women. In China, they're ready to make him Emperor. You get the idea. It's just dumb.
This has a crazy amount of stars in it for such a lemon. From Bruce Willis, to Kathy Bates, to John Ritter, to Dan Aykroyd. North's parents are played by Julia Louis Dreyfus and Jason Alexander (George and Elaine on Seinfeld). And this was Scarlett Johansson's first movie. She was only ten.
But even Elijah Wood, who was the best child actor going in the 90s, couldn't pull this one out of the fire. It's a mess.
