Saturday Night Live: The Best of Commercial Parodies
Since the creation of Saturday Night Live in the 1970s, one of the signatures of the show has been its commercial parodies. From subtle to outrageous, silly to realistic, SNL has always been able to poke fun at the folks on Madison Avenue with a variety of products not actually for sale.
Now you can enjoy your favorite commercial parodies that have aired over the past 30 years all on one DVD. Watch classics like "Little Chocolate Donuts," "Happy Fun Ball," "Mom Jeans," "Colon Blow," "Trump's House of Wings," "Oops I Crapped My Pants" or "Schmitt's Gay" again and again.

Almost nothing can beat The Best of Christopher Walken but this comes close. I don't think SNL ever gets as absurd as when they are spoofing commercials. The ads are usually very well produced and the cast rarely hold back. My favorite would be a tie between the ones for Baby Toupees and Colon Blow. I thought the hosting by Will Ferrell wasn't really necessary or that funny (it felt a bit lame compared to the rest of the DVD). It all averages out though because a lot of these parodies are great.Commerical Parodies Delivers the Goods - TheShamus
The Saturday Night Live DVD's are a "hit or miss" affair. Most of the DVD's are based around sketches from a single artist. This time around, the DVD is dedicated to the short segments on the show which are usually a play on an actual commercial.
This DVD is more comprehensive than many others in the series. There are close to 50 parodies. Will Farrell is the host, and does not really add a lot of value (that's what remote controls are for). In fact, the sketch around female hygeine is really close to some of the much funnier commercials -- so it almost seems out of place.
Overlooking this minor fault, it was really interesting to see how humour has changed over 3 decades. Most of all --- there are plenty of classic sketches with Eddie Murphy, Dan Ackroid and John Bulushi. It is surprising how well the newer stuff holds up as well.
There are plenty of laughs here. Like the regular show, it is not really aimed at younger kids. It's a nice bit of comedy to pull out because there are plenty of short segments -- if one does not hit, the next one start shortly. There are around 50 ads in all (including the extras).
This is a good DVD and one I would recommend from this series. Another good comedy DVD with similar pacing and content is the Conan O'Brien 10th Anniversary DVD.
As an editorial comment to the SNL producers ... it would be nice to have extras which have comments from the writers and stars in the segments --- or even hear the current cast talk about their favourite sketches. This would add value and boost the rating. In this case, at least there were some extras (in the form of some extra ads).
