I'm not sure the character Superman is all that interesting. His powers are so vast and his character is so sincere that it must be difficult to establish stakes in a Superman film. Bryan Singer tries and fails to have a more complicated and conflited superman. In the end we still have a bland invincible good guy. He appears to be able to do anything, and no effort is made to establish his limitations. When you are invincible it is difficult to convince the audience anything is at risk. The result is a well made bland blockbuster.A fun entry in the Superman anthology. - estefan
Keeping in the spirit of the Richard Donner Superman films, Bryan Singer crafts a fun homage to the hero, despite its many flaws. Brandon Routh is great as both Clark Kent and Superman, successfully portraying both the clumsiness of the former of the heroism of the latter. However, people not recognizing him is still a big suspension of disbelief. Kevin Spacey also seems to be having fun as Lex Luther, despite most of his dialogue being really expository. The only mis-cast here is Kate Bosworth, who doesn't have the spunk and likability that Lois Lane requires. Elsewhere, the action and special effects are really well put-together with the final fight scene being especially note-worthy. John Ottman also writes a lovely score, while evoking a sense of John Williams. Overall, while flawed, Superman Returns is a fun and very good portrayal of the Man of Steel.A well made film that remains true to it predecessors - movienut68
The latest installment of the superman saga follows the “Man of Steel” on a journey of self-discovery. After scientists believe that they have found remains of Superman’s home planet, Krypton, he leaves to find answers and possibly others like him, but finds nothing. Five years later he returns to Earth to find that its people have lost faith in their savior. He immediately goes back to work as the journalist Clark Kent, but life gets a whole lot more complicated when he sees Lois Lane and learns that she has a son and appears to be happily married. It does not take long for Clark to discover that there is an evil plan in the works and his arch nemesis, Lex Luther, is behind it once again. In another desperate attempt to get rid of Superman for good, and control the world, Lex is willing to kill millions and even billions of people. Superman is thrown into the fire (and in front of an out of control jumbo jet) again and the fate of the world rests in his hands.
The casting for the much-anticipated sequel was perfect. The director threw a virtual unknown (except to movie fanatics) as the lead character to eliminate the chance of any preconceived notions as to how Brandon Routh would do as the legend. Kevin Spacey has already proven many times that he is great at playing an antagonist so he was the only choice for the greatest comic book villain of all time. I applaud Brian Singer’s capability to stay true to the original even when it came to the opening titles. The screenwriters also did a fantastic job when it came to making small references to the previous movies such as the line “It’s a bird. It’s a plane….” well, you know the rest. My only bit of criticism is how, since Superman’s first appearance in comic books in 1938, we, as viewers, are expected to believe that no one can tell that Clark Kent is really Superman with glasses on.
