Heart Like A Wheel
The Shirley Muldowney Story
Bonnie Bedelia — in the triumphant performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress — stars as Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney, the young wife and mother who defied the sport of drag racing to become the only female top fuel champion in NHRA history. But before she could reach the record books, Shirley had to survive an abusive first marriage, her volatile love affair with fellow racer Connie Kalitta, a horrific accident, and a sexist world that tried to stand in the way of one remarkable woman who dared to put her heart on the line

Heart Like a Wheel is a great picture, telling the story of Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney as she broke into the male dominated sport of NHRA drag racing. My favorite scene is of the wreck at the drag strip with the blower bouncing drag the track. A great story told really well. The fat guys on bikes are funny too.Worth watching if you love car races, but I guess my sensibilities have changed in 25 years. - Yogini
I remembered being impressed by the character (Shirley Muldowney) and by the actress (Bonnie Bedelia). I am still impressed: Here is a woman who beat the guys at what may be the most guy-sport in America! Tough lady! And 1983 was not all that far removed from the feminism of the 1970s, so the film was, as we used to say, "Right on!" It was the very first movie I ever rented. It was on one of those huge disks - remember them? My husband and I had to rent the machine, and set it up, with all its appurtenances. We were pretty impressed with ourselves, too. All that technology was scary stuff in those days. As it turned out, 1983 was also the year we got our first computer (an Osborne, with two tiny disk drives that one of our cats sat and watched by the hour). Well, times change, and we change with them. The film, this time around, offended me, and here is something peculiar: It offended me because I just didn't want to spend my evening with low-class people! So - are we, North Americans generally - getting more civilized? Are we getting tired of low morals? I think we are. We have less tolerance for the moral turpitude of our entertainment icons and our polititians. Jane Austen rules! Whose stories have lasted longer?
