Marie Antoinette
The story of Marie Antoinette, a naïve 14-year-old Austrian and Queen of France. Though she was wed at a young age to Louis XVI through an arranged marriage, she was totally unprepared for the woes of politics.
Based on the book Marie Antoinette: The Journey by Antonia Fraser.

Don't waste your time watching this silly, empty movie. The costumes were nice but the story, or should I say the history, was non existent, the actors were like wooden dolls and after waiting to see if the movie was getting any better, I decided to stop the movie
and read a book.Coppola Got It Right - AJay
Coppola brings Versaille to life--the design of the movie captured how I imagine life would have been at the Palace which I visited some years ago. Versailles is its own character in the movie.
Knowing Marie Antoinette's end I expected a grim historical movie but was quite delighted by the portrayal of characters who seemed to prefigure contemporary Western materialism and excess. Using contemporary music was a risk but it is remarkably effective in drawing attention to the similarity of 'history' to our present day--the sounds are different but the artistry and feeling are nevertheless conveyed.
Kirsten Dunst's portrayal cuts through the formality of character I expected of this period piece and left me with a sense of a character. Whether historically accurate doesn't seem the point, but more that it was convincing.
I thought the true risk would have been filming en francais and using subtitles. It would have delivered a still clearer image.fun but not historical - fae78
This is one movie I was dying to see in the theatre, but alas I was a poor student and had no money at the time. After seeing the DVD I think skipping it wasn't the heartbreak.
I think Sopias idea (or perhaps the idea of the person who wrote the historical novel she based this movie on) of telling the story completly from Antoinette's point of view was interesting. She has been made out to be such a villian in history, I liked the counted view of exploring how young she was when she was put in power, and her actions (that unfortunatly adversly affected, perhaps destroyed the lives of the poor int he country) were a result of her being completly naive and ignorant of what her responsibilitys were. Perhaps being protected in the castle, being a teenager, she really didn't have a clue how her actions were affecting the country.
The problem with this movie is that while being told from this veiw, it did negelect too much information. For the ending to make sence the audience did need to be told more about what specific actions Antoinette was doing, and how they were affecting those around her. Even if she wasn't made to know, the audience should have.
