Robert Ryan Carries This Classic Western - bwod
A sheriff must stand up to a shifty saloon owner, who wants to eliminate law and order, in order to exploit the new-found wealth of a small frontier town.
Robert Ryan gets to play a normal character for a change in "The Proud Ones". He is the stoic lawman, trying to keep things together, while all hell breaks loose. Cowboys are running amok in town, after driving herds of cattle to the rail-head. Shootings have increased ten-fold, and the saloon-owner and his hatchet-men are trying to run roughshod over the sheriff and his deputies. Luckily, a young gun joins forces with Robert Ryan's character and backs him up against all the lawlesness. Jeffrey Hunter portrays the part well and shows a natural talent for the action-role in this film.
Overall, it's a fairly routine western but it's colour cinematography and good story and cast make it very watchable. I give it one firm thumb up.
