Curse of the Pink Panther
They're looking for Clouseau. That's begging for trouble!
Director Blake Edwards ignites a powder keg of laughter in this "delightful" (Boxoffice Magazine) caper involving a most inefficient search for France's most inept detective - using the bluntest instruments possible! Featuring David Niven (in his final screen performance), Robert Wagner, Herbert Lom, Ted Wass, and a hilarious cameo by Roger Moore, Curse of the Pink Panther overflows with "unadulterated fun" and "naughtiness" - Los Angeles Times.
With Clouseau still missing, the French president orders Clouseau's archrival - the dangerously deranged Dreyfus (Lom) - to find him. Having no such intentions, Dreyfus ingeniously hires the world's worst detective, New York Police Department's not-so-finest Clifton Sleigh (Wass), to ensure that Clouseau is never located. But it's beginning to look like his foolproof plan could end up making him look like the fool!

A few entertaining moments still add up to a very weak movie - Superdave
The unexpected death of Peter Sellers put the wildly popular Pink Panther series into limbo, but producer Blake Edwards tried to re-start things with this entry. Ted Wass is introduced as a new bumbling detective, this time from New York, now on the trail of the missing Clouseau. Various factions each have their own reasons for wanting him to fail in his search and send their top agent to thwart him. Most of the movie is taken up by Wass' bungling misadventures as he runs afoul of one agent after another. Some of these clashes result in entertaining moments, but after a while it all gets pretty episodic and rambling. Moreover the approach seems very sloppy and throwaway, as if 'take one' was used for every scene. The tight direction and sharp comic timing that characterized the early Sellers movies is largely absent, as are the expected elaborately staged, extended comedy-stunt ballets that also figured prominently earlier in the series. I expect that the budget on this one was lower than usual and the producers tried to hide this by not getting too ambitious at any point. Fans of the series are sure to be disappointed. This movie greatly disappointed me, and maybe I'm not the best critic, since I'm maybe being too harsh with it after watching the other older Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers; I have realized that the presence of Peter Sellers was what makes all the difference. Even the appearance of familiar characters like Cato, Mr. Chong, Balls, etc. could not save this movie. As well, the plot was confusing, there were too many characters and things going on, Clifton Sleigh is not even nearly as funny as Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, etc. The only ray of sunshine in this movie was the familiar Dreyfuss (Herbert Lom), who hasn't changed a bit. All the funny parts in the movie were involved with him. If you watched the other Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers...don't get this one. It might ruin your perspective.
