6teen: Employee of the Month
Nikki’s sales pull sucks, and Chrissy’s Manager-of-the-Month award is on the line. If she can’t pull Nikki up to speed, she’ll never get the title she’s longed for. So she tries a little reverse psychology. By giving Nikki the Employee-of-the-Month award with all its perks, Chrissy attempts to turn her in to a full blown Khaki Barn disciple. Nikki finds herself getting sucked in with promises of a little respect and a gorgeous employee bathroom… until she remembers who she is and kicks the door down - literally

I find that I have little patience for most teen programming. Disney Channel 'sit-coms' like Hannah Montana are excruciating as comedy entertainment and even worse when they go musical. Yet, 6teen is consistently funny without resorting to cheap sight gags and pratfalls all of the time and is cleverly observant of teen life with all of its insecurities and hangups. The characters are well individualized, and the dynamic between each of them evolves as the show goes on. The character animation and action direction are a bit simplistic, but the show is driven primarily by its character interactions anyway and it thrives on its writing.
In this episode, Khaki Barn blond Chrissy - out of a selfish desire to win Employee of the Month - resorts to trickery to retrofit non-conformist Nikki into the KB mold. This precipitates an identity crisis for Nikki as she finds herself examining her goals, motivations and image.
This episode wonderfully exemplifies what is best about the show. The creators understand the psychology of teens, with their image insecurities and constant need for peer reassurance, and their perpetual drive to find themselves and fit in, and use these issues to drive the stories ahead, to generate character interaction and set up comedic situations.
I like this show in general and this episode specifically and recommend it to parents looking for age appropriate teen viewing that won't insult their kids' developing aesthetic sensibilities.
