Great story for children - hshire
This movie did a great job in keeping the madness, through witty chitchat, of the hatter and white rabbit. One can expect a variety of musical numbers which fortunately arise at the right moment, instead of interrupting the story at its height. I do not purport to know of camera techniques, but as a viewer it was nice to watch something without dizzying camera work. Each frame was a gentle scene that captured all the characters and the formidable set. The production value may have been modest- as evidenced by the costuming- but it was sufficient the child actress was spot on. As a drawback, the film couldn't hold my interest so I watched it in two viewings. It was a good film, but having watched equally long films I didn't have that queasy feeling of not wanting it to end.Alice in wonderland/musical - Buffy
I remember watching this version when i was young and loved it when I saw it back in the 80's. That is why I was so happy whan I saw that it was available to rent on dvd! Now this movie did not resemble the great fantasy that I remembered as a kid... The setting looks very fake and there is a lot of singing! Some of the scenes were great but others dragged on and this movoe is very dated...Watch if you love musicalsIn Which Uncle Jesse Gets Slapped By A Chess Piece - Angora
When I was four, I watched this movie every day. Not having seen it for twenty years since, I gave it another go, and, while my adult eye picked up a few things (like an eerie artificiality to all of the sets and costumes) that my child’s eye didn’t, the movie was intended for my four-year-old self rather than for me, and I think it still works as a children’s film.
The film was originally broadcast as a two-part mini-series. Both parts are included on the disk, and the second part is the more entertaining one, by far. They’ve taken some liberties with the story, but the second half (Alice Through The Looking Glass) feels like it fits together more organically. It’s mostly based around a made-up plot in which the Jabberwocky stalks Alice through Looking-Glass Land - but that at least provides something to tie the story together. The second half also features far fewer scenes where Alice is alone, which means that things move faster, and the story has more energy, since the main point of this film is to showcase a series of cameo appearances - so the faster Alice meets and greets the other characters, the better.
The musical numbers in the second half are also a lot more fun than in the first half, but they’re all a bit cringe-worthy, with very literal lyrics, and overly-enthusiastic choreography.
That said, Natalie Gregory, who plays Alice, and is tasked mostly with affecting an expression of polite interest, makes the most of it. Considering that she wasn’t even ten years old when she filmed this, she does a fantastic job. There’s also a bit of a LOL appeal to seeing all of the famous actors and personalities who make appearances.
The bottom line is that, as an adult, the entire thing seems a bit creepy, embarrassing and tense. Younger children, however, will still enjoy the story, and have fun with the music – and that’s who it’s being pitched to.
