Jazz Shots from the West Coast: Volume 1
This outstanding DVD series pays homage to the two coasts and to some of the most important musicians who have spent a major part of their career there. Some of these musicians were born in the Midwest or the South, and later moved to one of the two coasts. What is taken into account when placing the musician in the East or West Coast categories, is where they spent the bulk of their artistic career, or where they recorded their most influential works.
This collection focuses exclusively on live performances ranging from clubs to festivals to TV studio engagements, without any speakers or introducers. Nothing but music!
Art Pepper, Chet Baker, Zoot Xims, Phineas Newborn Jr. Trio and Wes Montgomery are just some of the legends that are featured on this DVD.

Jazz Vignettes from the 60s and 70s - howling_dave
Each artist gets one or two tracks on this compilation of TV performances from the 60s and 70s. Artists on this disk: Art Pepper, Chet Baker Zoot Sims Phineas Newborn (x3), Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin, Shelly Manne (x2), Wes Montgomery. Interestingly, although they use a Dave Brubeck theme on the menu page, he does not appear on this disk! The sound is OK, and the video is an OK mixture of B&W and colour. If you are into jazz and want to experience as many performances as are available, then rent this video, but it will not have wide appeal. It is too bad they did not have comprehensive credits regarding the identity of the side musicians.
