Safe Men
Welcome to the world of disorganized crime.
For the first time on DVD and from comic filmmaker John Hamburg (Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Along Came Polly, Meet the Fockers) comes this offbeat tale of inept lounge singers Sam (Sam Rockwell, Matchstick Men) and Eddie (Steve Zahn, Out of Sight), who find themselves breaking into the burglary biz when they're mistaken by a low-level mobster (Paul Giamatti, Sideways) for the best safecrackers in town.
Now two guys who can't carry a tune are carrying off a series of hysterical heists in this comic gem that critics hailed as "the most original comedy of the year" (Newsday).

I don't know what happened! I watched this movie a few years ago during my Sam Rockwell fascination and it was hilarious. I rented it again for old time's sake and found that the humour hadn't aged well... Safe Men is well written and well acted, but the caricatures, ahem, characters are outlandish, in a bad way. Some parts are funny, some parts are awful. Romantic subplot is crucial but lame. Overall, it's a groaner.Safe Men - Aneke
While this movie allowed me to enjoy Paul Giamatti's work for the first time, and made me realize that Steve Zahn could be more than a quirky sidekick, I can't recommend it. The plot was all over the place - my head is still spinning. It wasn't that it was complicated - it was anything but - it just wasn't coherent. I was expecting a great crime-comedy, instead I got a series of lame jokes and uninspired dialogue.Just skip it - EllieAndrews
After reading some unfavourable reviews I thought, "How bad can it be? It has some of my favourite actors." The answer: pretty bad. A little less than an hour into the movie, it had barely moved forward, and I could not take it any longer. Generally, it's easy to exceed my expectations when they are as low as they were going into this movie. Not so this time. The best I can say is that there were brief flashes of promise and wit, and that some of the actors were very good.
One last thing: I like quiet comedies as much as I like farcical ones; I also have an appreciation for conversational, understated films. I have seen this movie described as "conversational" and "understated", and perhaps that's true: but it is also just too flimsy and insubstantial to sustain my interest. Which is a shame, because those flashes of promise suggest this movie could have been much better.
