Some sacrifices must be made.
In a remake of the 1973 British horror thriller of the same name, Nicolas Cage plays a reclusive sheriff who goes to search for his estranged daughter after she mysteriously disappears on a secluded island. When he arrives, he senses something more is amiss among the island's secretive residents as he starts to uncover a mystery involving strange sexual rituals, a harvest festival and possible human sacrifice.

Nicholas Cage proves with this movie that he will pretty much act in any movie for enough money. The story is absolutely brutal, the characters totally unbelieveable, and the acting (for the most part) beyond bad--while taking itself ultraseriously. And because of that it is actually quite funny.
I mean, when Cage stole a full bear suit costume and then started punching women in the face, my wife and I almost fell on the floor laughing.Weak Performances In A Silly Story - revsdd
Obviously, sometimes even good actors will agree to start in a movie simply for the sake of the paycheque. Equally obviously, this was one of those examples. What we have here is a decent enough cast (headed by Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn) simply going through the motions without putting anything that even remotely seemed like passion or even effort into it. Lack of passion and effort aside, I thought Cage was in any event rather poorly cast as Edward Malus, a California cop who investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a mysterious island off the coast of Washington State. That, of course, led to one of the anomalies of the movie as Sister Beech (Diane Delano), after she and the women in her café were told by Malus that he was there on official police business, challenged him with the words "official California police business - but this is Washington." True. Someone involved with this movie apparently forgot the concept of police jurisdiction! Alongside Cage's unconvincing portrayal of Malus was the weak performance of Burstyn in a very silly role as Sister Summersisle - a sort of pagan high priestess in this commune of women who like to sacrifice men to gain the approval of the gods and goddesses. Seeing Burstyn with her face painted half blue at least was worthy of a laugh. Yeah, there's a little bit of worthwhile suspense as we wait to find out what actually happened to young Rowan, but overall this just struck me as a truly bad movie.I actually liked it! - Hyacinth
I read the reviews for this one and thought to myself, "Well, I'll give it a try anyway." And I'm glad I did. Yes, this movie is weird. Yes, this movie does not make any sense at times. But this movie is such an obvious remake from another day and age, that the wierdness is almost comical. This movie is not a horror, nor is it scary. The premise is that Nicholas Cage's character is contacted by an ex-girlfriend and is recruited to help search for her missing child. The catch is that she lives on a secluded island commune where woman are more superior than men. That's the weird part. The woman all speak formally almost like they come from a different era, however, Cage doesn't buy it or take any crap and he actually has some funny lines. Now the end, which I will not reveal here, is very incredibly hokey. In the "I can't believe that just happened" kind of way. This movie is by far not a blockbuster, but I appreciated it for what it was.
