Why do all of Zach Braffs performances seem the same? He's done the good hearted but troubled young man, on the verge of a major life choice, routine way too many times. This is just another entry. If you have seen Garden State, you have seen this. I kinda liked both, but grew weary of his performance about halfway through this one.Bad to worse - movywatcher
This movie was so depressing. It focused on the shamefulness of humanity and the inability for the average age group of 30 something to make a go of their lives and marriage. It demonstrated that not only will the love of your life sleep with someone else but that you can have a child with them and they will still leave. It also showed that even your parents are not off limits to the new starter marriage syndrome. This was throughly depressing and rather slow.More Honest Than We Might Like To Believe - FilmJunkie
I am still unsure as to whether or not I liked this movie. In many ways it is melodramatic and entirely without sympathetic characters. On the other hand, maybe this is a more honest protrayal of real human beings.
Zach Braff plays a man whose girlfriend (Jacinda Barrett) is pregnant and then cheats on her with a young college student (Rachel Bilson). Braff's character is an idiot who cheats on a great girl and therefor perhaps he is a more real person because there are many of us who make these stupid decisions in life.
This movie is a story about men dealing with love and, in many cases, running away from it. Casey Affleck's character cannot cope with his wife and child and Eric Christian Olsen's character is in love with a girl until she wants him to meet her parents. Yet as much as I want to hate the behavior, I know a lot of guys like this and therefore I cannot be frustrated with the story, only with the reality.
The film also follows Blythe Danner and Tom Wilkinson as Barrett's parents whose marriage seems to be collapsing. These two are great actors and seeing them work together is a real treat. Danner is a magnificent woman.
So I guess I have come to the conclusion that I did like this movie because despite what I might want to believe, people really do behave this way.
