Academy Award-winner Robert Duvall (1983 Best Actor in a Leading role, Tender Mercies) and nominee Thomas Hayden Church (Sideways) star in this moving Western drama.
Set in 1897, Print Ritter (Duvall) and his estranged nephew Tom Harte (Hayden Church) become the reluctant guardians of five abused and abandoned Chinese girls. Ritter and Harte's attempts to care for the girls are complicated by their responsibility to deliver a herd of horses while avoiding a group of bitter rivals, intent on kidnapping the girls for their own purposes. Classic Western action takes center stage in this dramatic miniseries.

Very good Movie - careaid
This movie is very good, it is a western with good actors in it. I must warn you, it is a long movie, like 3 hours long. However if u like westerns u will surely enjoy this movie. It has some violence in it but not much. This movie my husband i enjoyed very much and would watch it again on a rainy night. Rent it if u like westerns, its a good movie, but long. Worthwhile watching.Another Robert Duvall Western That Works - bwod
From "Lonesome Dove", to "Open Range", and now "Broken Trail", Robert Duvall proves that he must have been a cowboy in a former life. Looking more and more the part, he and co-star Thomas Haden Church, who actually is a rancher down in Texas, carry this 2-part mini-series. For western fans it's definitely quality material. My only complaint is that it drags a bit, at close to 3 hours. Never-the-less, I heartily recommend it and give it one firm thumb up.Nothing to write home about: - Hibou
Robert Duvall is an excellent actor but here he seemed to drop back into his classic portrayal of Augustus McRae in 'Lonesome Dove' and never really stepped out of it. Thomas Hayden Church is not seen often enough, yet in this film he adopts the character of an 'aww shucks' buckaroo that can't seem to say what is really on his mind at any given time; especially with women, and in the next instant is a cold-hearted killer. The plot was interesting but the director chose not to take risks. The film of horses running here an there in every direction brought nothing new. The scenery stole the show. 3 stars out of 5
