On the Beach
Based on the novel by Nevil Shute.
A made-for TV movie version of the 1959 classic film about survivors of a nuclear war. In this updated treatment, Australia is the only country to be spared from annihilation, but it is destined to suffer the consequences from the nuclear fallout. A team of American submariners and a cynical Australian scientist head north to search for survivors and hope.

Finally, an end of the world movie that focuses on what actually matters! This powerful look at nuclear annihilation struck a strong chord with me in its depiction of the aftermath of world-wide nuclear war.
I particularly enjoyed Armand Assante's depiction of the sub captain, and his own struggle with his role in the decimation. I work in large industrial settings and his character struck me as authentic with many of the high level managers I have had the opportunity to work with.
This movie should play to a broader audience - to instill in us all what nuclear warfare would most likely entail - and hopefully drive us further from the brink.Better than original - snakesup
Seldom is a re-do better than the original, but this time around the 21st Century remake of the 50's nuclear disaster passed the test. Much more action, vivid, and tear-jerking. Recommended for all politicians bent on "saving us". Pushed to 5-stars based on originality of a re-make.Cold war film with a message - Peter_Victoria_BC
This film was shot in Australia with mainly Aussie cast members. Originally made into a film in the late 50s based on the haunting book by Nevil Shute starring Gregory Peck in Armand Assante's role, it is a telling tale of the horror and futility of war. The characters and story line are superb, though the theme is now a bit dated. This is a very long film, very thought provoking, and takes a lot out of you watching it, so be prepared, but well worth the effort.
