Petulia
People bugged by people will do extraordinary things.
Julie Christie plays a unhappily married socialite trying to get through to a recently divorced doctor (George C. Scott), who in his own words just wants to "feel something." He'll soon feel, even hurt, a lot. Because we know why kooky Petulia so desperately reaches out. As Lester zigzags through the flashbacks and flash-forwards of cinematographer Nicolas Roeg's startling images and Lawrence B. Marcus' knowing screenplay, Petulia's jigsaw pieces form a celluloid time capsule of life and love in the turbulent '60s.

Not much more to say than that my partner, while watching this movie, said, out loud, “George C. Scott is sexy!” a statement that, if the records are consulted, one will note has never previously been uttered by anyone anywhere at any time! Also curious: if you have any doubts about the role of the director of photography in the authorship of cinematographic art, please note how lensman Nicholas Roeg’s hash-stained fingerprints are all over this cubist sexmare of jealousy and sadistic appropriation of the female form through grotesque, synthetic ritual and bloated, Greco-Roman abandon. I am reminded of the visible presence of Derek Jarman as art director in early Ken Russell especially in the delightful writhing of The Devils. All the great films are brought into port by more than one Captain, and the business is always perilous, divided, as chaotic as guerilla warfare. If Roeg were not involved, the film would probably be a giddy, hip, The Knack and How to Get It 2 with the sexual poles reversed and the generational (and national) politics slightly skewed. Instead, Petulia plays out and reciprocally reads like a dry run for the dryhump masterpiece Bad Timing, Roeg’s greatest achievement to this date.
