The Racket
Boldy begins where the senate crime committee left off!
Based on Bartlett Cormack's popular Roaring Twenties play, Racket is a hard-hitting action drama about a tough cop trying to put a mean racketeer out of business. Robert Mitchum plays Captain McQueeg, an honest man in a city of corrupt politics. Both the towns prosecuting attorney, Welch (Ray Collins), and the police inspector, Turck (William Conrad), are on the dole from kingpin mobster Scanlon (Robert Ryan) and his band of trigger-happy goons. McQueeg persuades knockout dame Irene (Lizabeth Scott), a chanteuse at Scanlons club, to squeal on Scanlon's kid brother. When Scanlon hears that Irene is going to sing for the judge, he decides to put a permanent lid on her. But even if McQueeg can save the girl and catch Scanlon, hes still got his own crooked bosses to contend with. Ryan turns in a stellar performance as the villain, and Racket's dark, action-packed plot, handled masterfully by seasoned director John Cromwell (Dead Reckoning, of Human Bondage), hurtles like a midnight train toward the film's stunning conclusion.

I am a big fan of the film noir and this DVD is no exemption. It has a great list of stars such as Robert Mitchum, William Conrad (you can’t miss the famous voice) from Cannon, and Ray Collins. I always like Collins as he plays a bad guy similar to the one in Citizen Kane. Robert Ryan is excellent as the bad guy. If you like him here, I would highly recommend Bad Day at Black Rock as he is superb in that as well.
Overall, it will pass the time and you will enjoy The Racket.Soooo Boring - upwitharts
We love film noir. We forgive corny, melodramatic, etc. We don't forgive BORING. Don't let the images here fool you. BORING. And really silly, even for its time. What was Robert Mitchum thinking? His talent was totally wasted in this terrible movie--he should have stuck to playing the menacing bad guy. He just sleep walks through this thing. Probably because he was BORED from reading the script.
