Agatha Christie: Thirteen at Dinner
Hercule Poirot appears on a TV talk show with actor Bryan Martin who is making an action/detective movie with Jane Wilkinson. He also meets impressionist Carlotta Adams. They all go to a party and Jane asks him and Captain Hastings to go and meet her husband, Lord Edgware, in regards to a divorce. They do so only to discover that the Lord had already granted her a divorce. Jane is delighted but drops hints that she could have killed the Lord if he didn't grant her the divorce. The next day Lord Edgware is found dead and all the staff at the Lord's house swear that Jane was the one who did it but witnesses at another Lord's party swear that Jane was with them. Carlotta then dies and Poirot must investigate as Inspector Japp is determined to put Jane away.

This is a competent rendering of an Agatha Christie tale although I was initially put off by placing it in a modern setting (cerca 1985 in this case). David Suchet is unbeatable in the BBC production and does an excellent job of playing Inspector Japp in this one. He's just a great actor, plain and simple. Bill Nighy is also here, looking oh so young, as of course he was. All in all, an enjoyable 90 minutes.Agatha Christie: Thirteen at Dinner - TheWiz
Peter is not Suchet and we could leave it at that and that would be the end of the review so far as I am concerned. After viewing this movie, I cancelled the balance of the series. Peter has the chops and would be the reigning King with regards to Hercule if it weren't for Suchet who takes Agatha's Belgian detective's persona to a high level. Children never lie and my 10 year old, already a Suchet addict, looked at us confused and said, "Suchet doesn't look like Poirot. How come?". That's because he is not playing Poirot in this movie, we replied. "Why not?", said my Daughter. Indeed; why not. Enough said. Not the best Poirot - but worth a watch - Mark_the_Bard
While the story was good and definitely worth watching, and the acting ok, I didn't like the casting of this show. It might be because I have watched, and liked, many other Poirot movies with David Suchet as Poirot, but this one left me a little off. I didn't like Peter Ustinov as Poirot, nor did I like David Suchet as Jap.
We jsut saw a much better rendition, with Suchet as Poirot, called Lord Edgeware Dies. If you are only going to watch one I would recommend it instead.
