A Family Secret (Le secret de ma mère)
A funeral digs up its own little secrets
On New Year's Day, while a storm blows on Montreal, parents and friends meet at the funeral parlor for the viewing of the seventy-year-old Jos (David Boutin). Despite the sadness of the event, a party mood slowly starts up among the people around Jeanne (Céline Bonnier), Jos' daughter, and Blanche (Ginette Reno), his former spouse. Throughout the day, from the recollections of one or the other, Jeanne learns astonishing secrets from her parents' past.

Un très bon film - jojo45
Le secret de ma mère est un excellent film. On y retrouve une famille rassemblée pour des funérailles. Ce sera l'occasion pour une femme de remuer le passé et de tenter de comprendre les secrets qui entourent sa naissance. L'histoire vouant captivera du début à la fin. Et que dire des révélations finales!
Le jeu des acteurs est superbe, vraiment, il y a beaucoup de talent réuni dans ce film.

This is such a good film! My French-language skills can manage the back of the cereal box at breakfast-time, or the words of a slow song (slow enough to allow simultaneous in-my-head translation), and are not up to the rapid repartee of real-situation film, and so I had to depend to a great extent on the English-language subtitles - never a perfect solution. In spite of this handicap, the script, direction, actors, settings, etc., are all well above par - even for Canadian French-language film - which has a deservedly high reputation. The women are great! And the attitudes toward death are refreshingly honest - and gently hilarious.Secret being kept! - Cricri7
Le secret de ma mère is a secret very well kept because it flew under the radar when it came out. It got good critics but did not shatter any box office records. However, I really liked that film. It tells the story of a family being brought together by the death of one of its members. All through the time spent at the funeral parlor, secrets come out about the family. I won't say more. What I will say is that every actor in that movie is simply incredible, from Clemence Desrochers to Celine Bonnier!
Ginette Reno is one of the best singers in Quebec, and probably the francophony, and she is one of the best actresses around. She did not have any classical training as an actress. She does it all by instinct and it always works. You always believe the role she plays. She inhabits her roles. This woman could have had one of the biggest careers around, like Celine Dion, but chose to stay here close to her family. She is one of our best kept secrets!
