A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
Director Dito Montiel’s coming-of-age drama is inspired by Montiel’s own youth in New York. A successful writer living in Los Angeles, Dito (Downey Jr.) is summoned home to Astoria, after a 15-year absence, by his mother (Wiest) when his father (Palminteri) becomes seriously ill. As Dito finds himself whisked back into the childhood events that shaped him, we meet an unforgettable cast of characters living in the thick of a sweltering 1986 Queens summer.

RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS is a very immature, poorly made, sexually violent, pedophile fantasy that isn't even pleasant to watch. In fact, watching this movie is like having root canal without painkiller. Graphic sex and violence, constant assaults of the "f" word, and lack of a coherent plot, all work against the quality of the performances, some of which are very good. In spite of the violence, there are moments of intense boredom. Thus, A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS is not a movie that engages the audience.Below average... - Cricri7
I zipped this movie because of the great actors in it. You get Robert Downey Jr, Chazz Palminteri and Shia Leboeuf to name a few. The problem is that it is not very believable with the casting. They made big mistakes that I had problems overlooking. One part of the movie is a gang of youngsters growing up together and you get to revisit them when they are adults. The problem with the adult casting is they took actors from Eric Roberts to Rosario Dawson that have a difference of 25 years yet they are supposed to have grown up together. It does not ring true. It is a low budget movie but it is not the reason why I thought it not very good.A Good Movie, Plain and Simple - Stepha83
I rented this movie because the cast is amazing..... Robert Downey Jr., Channing Tatum, Shia LeBeouf, and Dianne Wiest? How could I ask for more?
Given the all-star cast, the movie definitely didn't disappoint. While it's certainly not a blockbuster or an edge of your seat thriller, it's a great film about realizing who you are, where you came from, and what's really important in life.
I wish I could give 1/2 stars, because it's certainly better than just 3, although maybe not quite 4. I've already recommended this film to several people.
