Loses potential halfway through - eoguy

Overall, Turistas is a lazy movie. I was surprised to discover it wasn't subtitled (for some reason I was under the impression this was an import...perhaps due to bad marketing). Ultimately it didn't matter where it was made because scriptwise it fell apart literally at the halfway mark.

The movie is quite the same as The Ruins and other vacation chillers and it doesn't really aspire to be anything else. It's hard not to draw parallels to Hostel because both films were released relatively close to each other and a lot of their beats feel the same. But while Hostel isn't a very good movie in itself, at least it had enthusiasm and cast that, while over-the-top, played their roles effectively. Here, nobody stands out, the events are underwhelming and the horror is practically non-existent.

travel is dangerous - TMFan

Thanks to movies like Saw and Hostel, we have a new horror subgenre commonly referred as torture porn. A lot of new horror films are veering in that direction, and that sucks. Turistas however is, in my opinion, torture porn done right so it doesn't feel as pornographic as the aforementioned Hostel. It's actually a real movie that manages to have a few torture scenes in it. The characters aren't your typical disrespectful teens so you actually root for them, and although there is some of the usual cliches, the film is well made and pretty nasty in this unrated version. However, just like that other movie I won't mention again, it doesn't give a very positive or accurate depiction of foreign countries and their population, which is just unfortunate.That element is not too over the top in Turistas, but it's still there.

Very good movie. This film is much better than you would expect. It is not a horror it is a thriller and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Very suspenseful. This film had good acting, a good story and I enjoyed it. As a comparison, this movie is much better than Hostel (Which I would give a 2 Star). If you like suspense like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you will like this movie.
