This movie was a very tender and heart-warming story about the love within families and reaching out to others. I hope to adopt someday myself.
Hightlight: There is a 13 minute extra where the writer and his "Martian child" do a bit of a retrospective on how the story was written based upon their relationship, trials and tribulations and that the child in the film is, in fact, a mirror to his own adopted son (who we do get to meet).
Eccentric writer ostracized in his early childhood for being "odd" loses his wife and finds his calling in being the father to an adopted son who is even odder than he was.
The movie is charming even though sometimes it pushes the message too far and occasionally relies on heavy cliche. This is a very moving tale made even more moving in light of the fact that it was based on a true story. It made me smile - littlechels
Ever since I heard about this film a couple years ago, I have always been curious about it. I am so glad I decided to rent this film.
This is a really sweet film about a boy and a man figuring out what family is. I really loved the characters and could see all sides of the spectrum.
It was predictable, but so heartwarming that I didn't mind how predictable it was. As a new parent myself, I certainly understood a lot of what John Cusack's character David was going through.

I read a lot of reviews on Zip that trashed this film. They all seem to run in the theme of: I could see it coming from a mile away.
I'm confused by this. Of course you could. This film promises up front exactly what it delivers. I'm surprised that so many would find this so disappointing.
One thing I liked was that this wasn't just a string of gags. The number of truly quirky characters is low. The weirdness of the situation drives the whole thing. This gives you enough room to think that these are normal folks who might be your friend, brother or you.
If you read the description and think "huh, that sounds interesting" then go ahead and try it. You'll get exactly what you expect out of it.
