Norbit
Have you ever made a really big mistake?
Norbit (Eddie Murphy) has never had it easy. As a baby, he was abandoned on the steps of a Chinese restaurant/orphanage and raised by Mr. Wong (Eddie Murphy) - that was heavy. Things get worse when he's forced into marriage by the mean, obscene, junk food-chugging queen, Rasputia (Eddie Murphy). Just when Norbit's hanging by his last thread, his childhood sweetheart, Kate (Thandie Newton), moves back to town. But Norbit will show them all why some vows are made to be broken.

I don't understand why this movie gets such a bad rap. Its a cute story with it's heart in the right place. I agree Rasputia is over the top annoying, but that is a minor, forgivable flaw in an otherwise fun film. Eddie Murphy continues to amaze me with the different characters he creates. Eddie Griffin and Katt Williams are near perfect as pimps (the goofy - PG rated kind). I did think, however that Cuba Gooding jrs character was miscast as he seemed out of place. Thandie Newton makes up for that though, as she seems to add at least one star to anything she is in.Waste! - beccasue
I couldn't believe how much this movie stunk! I am generally the type of person who can watch almost anything, but this I could not stand! I didn't even watch the whole thing, and didn't laugh at a single part. I just didn't get it at all... at least it seems like I am not alone in that.No to Norbit. - JasonTHX
I tried to watch "Norbit" with an unobjective mind. I enjoyed the 2 "Nutty Professor" movies. I love lowbrow humour (South Park, Kevin Smith). But during the entire time of "Norbit" I never laughed or smiled even once. That's not good for a movie into which so much time and energy was put into this. The Brilliant Eddie Murphy (and he can be brilliant) plays 3 different Characters In "Norbit". He plays Norbit - weak, slow clueless, Rasputia, the huge loud trashy behoemouth who Norbit grudgingly marries, and Mr. Wong the old asian caretaker to Norbit. The big problem here is that eaxh character is really unlikable and annoying, even Norbit and that's why the movie fails. The filmakers decide to pick on Norbit and make fun of him just like everyone else in the movie. If you knew someone in real life like Norbit, would you be his friend? Unh-unh! It's like laughing at the special needs kid in school. Of course in movies like this there has to be an actual realistic character to counter the looney tunes like evewnts in the movie. This would be Norbits childhood sweetie Kate played with some actual emotion by the gorgeous and talented Thandie Newton (who's way too classy for this). When Kate returns to Norbits black hole of a life Norbit decides he's meant for kate and wants rid of Rasputia. This is where the movie also gets jumbled. Norbit's change in himself happens so abrubtly we're not sure when it happned. That's a problem as well. Also there is this sub-plot about Noirbit's husky brothers-in law and Kate's husband to buy out Mr. Wong's orphanage and turn it into - aw...ho cares? I'd lost interest long before that. What a shame that so many talented people spent so much time on this excuse for a comedy. Eddie Murphy,so razor sharp in the 80's has now decided to hide himself behind makeup and fat suits (extremely well designed by Rick Baker)he shields himself from the audience. We can't connect with him. It's a shame. Everyone deserves better.
