I enjoyed this movie- it sustained my interest to the end even though it was somewhat slow and lacked any real "thriller" tension. It was all about the style for me- the great-looking characters, the off-beat shots, the saturated colours- and the music was great too. Definitely not for the prudish- but why would you be watching an Almodovar movie anyway? Lots of sex and close-ups of young groins in athletic wear...that sort of thing. I thought Antonio Banderas, always attractive, not bad playing an innocent, perhaps part of the director's alter-ego, as Penelope Cruz is another. An always
extraordinary director to my taste...the"Almodovar" touch of integrating plots and sub-plots this is a must see for fans of this director - barkersbeauties
In this Spanish back comedy a beautiful female lawyer Maria (Assumpta Serna) is sexually obsessed about bull fighting and her favorite bull fighter was the national hero Diego (Nacho Martinez). Because he now has a limp as a result of been badly gored he can no longer fight bulls. Diego now teaches bull fighting and one of his students is a young man named Angel (Antonio Banderas). Angel is berated by his religious mother and so he wants to be a bull fighter even though he faints at the sight of blood. Angel is goaded about his manhood both by Diego and his mother and so he ends up confessing to the police of committing murders he did no do. Maria who has her own obsession with murder elects to defend Angel and she wants to meet her hero Diego. Unknown by Maria her hero Diego has not lost his lust for killing when he retired from bull fighting. With its Interesting nudity and the"Almodovar" touch of integrating plots and sub-plots this is a must see for fans of this director.Different - rnhaas
This is a fairly disturbing "thriller" that manages to stay interesting through the bizarre love-story angle and the somewhat-foreshadowed left-turn in the third act. It's certainly the most entertaining of his movies I've yet seen. Now that I think about it, the sense of humour is really the best part. Definitely not for the prudish.
