The Hoax
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
In 1970, authors Clifford Irving (Richard Gere) and Richard Suskind (Alfred Molina) get together and devise a scheme that they're sure will make them wealthy. After doing extensive research, Irving writes an unauthorized biography of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes – filled with fictional events.
Using forged documents, he convinces publishing company McGraw-Hill that he has a close relationship with Hughes, and successfully signs a lucrative book deal. Naturally, when the bogus book comes out, experts immediately question its authenticity, but McGraw-Hill stands by Irving. Irving’s plan is carried out so persuasively that even when Hughes momentarily emerges from seclusion to address the media in a telephone news conference and discredits the book, McGraw-Hill continues to support him.

True Fake Story - ABC99
The Hoax is a surprisingly alive story of deception and moral compromise. Richard Gere give a terrifically sleazy performance as a writer fabricating an autobiography of a still living recluse. Each scene where he is confronted on his deception is delightfull, as further deception keeps him from exposure. This is a great, under appreciated entertainment.Everyone enjoys a good Hoax - movie_goer
Except about the balloon boy....
The hoax is good fun entertainment, it's also factual From Cliffords point of view. But from his past mishaps you never he never could tell right from wrong. But like most From The first time Howard Hughes flew his first plane and starred in short films he captivated the world. Scorcesse's Aviator also helped keep his legacy alive. The hoax however is about an outsider liking in at Hughes through an objective and blind eye. It's truly a film people should watch. The Truth of the Lie - Mookie
I really enjoyed this film. All I knew going in was that this author had lied to a book company that he had permission from howard Huges to write his biography. Now admittedly, once you know that you basically know the whole story but the interactions of the characters and the way the lie spirals out of control are what make this such an enjoyable movie. The director tries to paint the lead with some sympathy by having him being cruelly turned aside by the book company but the truuth is that this guy was a lying a**hole and he represents all such liars. They can always justify after the fact that they aren't such a bad guy for lying and it wasn't his fault and they deserved it for believing me and so on. I do wish the director had done a little more to show what a creep this guy was/is but I think it will come through to the reflective viewer.
