We Own the Night
Two brothers on opposite sides of the law. Beyond their differences lies loyalty.
What if your own family stood in the way of everything you worked for? Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) has forsaken his name to escape his family and their tradition in law enforcement to pursue his ambitions as a Brooklyn nightclub owner. As he turns a blind eye to the drug dealers around him, he comes face to face with the family he abandoned when his brother (Mark Wahlberg) and father (Robert Duvall) crack down on the club. Now Bobby must choose a side. Is he going to turn informant or will he help run the biggest crime ring in New York history?

Great story, horrible execution - easyHwolf
We finished this movie and felt very let down. We thought about why and examined the story and the acting.
The story is well thought out, the plot, the idea, the emotions and scenes that would be required.
But somehow, the acting left us very uninspired. You don't feel for the actors, people die and you feel apathy.
Don't bother renting.Little Odessa Part 2? - KeithTalent
A police/crime drama, with Mark Wahlberg and Joaquin Phoenix playing brothers on opposite sides of the law and Robert Duvall as their father (he's also a big wig on the police force). I'm not even really sure what it is about this film, but something just did not grab me. I wasn't really bored and I wasn't really interested, just kind of bleh I guess. There were a couple of cool scenes (the car chase was one) but I did not find some of the scenarios believable and I did not care a tonne about the characters, so I guess that's the main problem. I think I would rather just watch Little Odessa which has a lot of similar elements and, not surprisingly, is from the same director. Can't win them all... - filmgeek
What can I say? A team of Mark Wahlberg, Joaquim Phoenix and Robert Duvall should have been a knockout. Unfortunately, what we have is a standard movie-of-the-week glossed up with Hollywood production values.
Not that the movie does not pass the time, it is entertaining in a generic kind of way, but it is nowhere near the kind of gritty cop drama which the movies 'Narc', 'Serpico' and 'French Connection' perfected.
If you want passable entertainment, give this a watch. If you want to be really impressed, look elsewhere.
