The other reviews on this page say it best: despite a strong cast that includes Tyrone Power, Osron Welles, and Jack Hawkins, this film is far too slow. From England of the 13th century, and on to India and China, there should be much more action and adventure in this film than there is. Unfortunately, the action is often skipped for plodding dialogue, and battles are shown in their aftermath only. The visuals are fantastic--about the only real strong quality this one has. A major disappointment. The Black Rose - Alex8
I have read the book, & the movie is quite differant. In the book, Walter & Maryam get married in China, & they have a child. In the book, Maryam knows only two words of English, "Walter and London" When they are seperated, she is only reunited with Walter after an arduous & difficult journey. The child is two or three years old. The movie is not bad, just not as good as the book.

With so much going for it (adaptation of a popular novel, generous budget, technically proficient, capable cast), this movie should have been much better.
The main fault is the script and the lack of action. With a two hour running time there should have been more action. Battle scenes are represented by the aftermath of battle and distant fires. Not much to catch the interest.
Tyrone Power seems a bit old to play the youthful scholar and the love interest appears childlike compared to him. Orson Welles is competent as the general and Jack Hawkins does well as Tris.
The film transfer is excellent with the location photography shown to advantage.
The addition features include a commentary, a featurette on Power's leading ladies (very superficial), an isolated score and a still gallery.
The Bottom Line: Not worth a rental - watch a snail race instead.
