Three bandits come upon a dying mother and child while escaping the law. Two of them die trying to get the child to town and safety.

A different sort of Western - MaBanGrid

First, I have to say that zipping this title was a mistake, only caught after it was too late to unzip it. Having said that, although I am not a big fan of westerns, I found this one interesting and different from the normal fare. There are the normal clichés of the genre -- horse chases, gun play and folksy dialogue -- but alot more philosophic dialogue than seems to be usual. The religious elements are understated, even though it was set at Christmas time and produced in 1948. Harry Carey, Jr. is a fine singer [uncredited], and his classical training shows thru. There is a bit of overacting which was typical of the time and the genre, but overall it is a pleasant piece that is a bit more than galloping horses and gun play.

Lesser Ford/Wayne Pairing, But Still Entertaining - Gregg

Story of three outlaws on the run, who while crossing the desert come across a dying woman and her new born baby. The three men are torn between their desire to escape and their responsibility to the child, they promised the dying woman that they would care for her baby.

While this isn't one of the best films that Director John Ford and his star John Wayne would make together it is still quite entertaining especially for fans of both Wayne and Ford. The film does use a lot of religious themes that might not work for all viewers.

Along with Wayne his two co-stars are Harey Carey Jr. and Pedro Armendáriz, both of whom would have fairly prolific and respected careers .The film as to be expected features many familiar faces from Ford's so called stock company of actors highlighted by Mildred Natwick as the babies mother and Ward Bond as the Sherriff leading the pursuing posse. The performances are overall quite good.

This would be one of the few pictures in which Wayne was at least ostensibly a villain, although he is an outlaw with many redeeming qualities.

This would be the third time this story based on a novel by Peter B Kyne had been adapted by Hollywood, including once previously by Ford himself. Both of the previous versions were silent and had featured Harey Carey, whose son appears in this version. The film has more recently been re-imagined as the Anime, Tokyo Godfathers.
