This is just a super cute, feel good movie. The story is fun, funny and fabulous! I loved the development of the characters... the 'ups and downs' of pursuing your dreams. Showing the times when your ready to give up, but a 'voice inside your head' keeps telling you to get up and go. The fantasy parts of this movie (a rat cooking...) will appeal to the kids, but adults will love the bigger lessons touched on. Highly recommend it!Fun and Funky - simpleme
Beyond being a well animated film, this movie really shows that even though it can be hard, it's important to always follow your dreams. Things can come up to alter the path in life, but stick to what you know in your heart, and it will work out in the end. An uplifting story about underdogs, love, and high quality french cuisine. Who couldn't enjoy this?A Stew of Creativity, Cliché, Sentiment and Cynicism - KevinJaques
The animation was far ahead of its time, about 2007, and as of 2010, still looks great. It's reality, stylized artistically. The rat movements are excellent in particular, and several scenes work pretty well as an action movie.
It's about the love of food. That's plainly heartfelt and the makers knew plenty about gourmet cooking. It argues that life should be lived as one would cook, boldly, creatively, according to your own nature, savouring the flavours.
I found the climax with the critic quite moving.
And then it stirs in a love interest, and some Daddy issues, and problems with peer groups, troubles handling success, and a greedy villain, and more, most of which was just to fill out the movie and pander to target markets. And the result was to make it feel more like a manufactured product and less like a gourmet meal.
So, they should have stuck with the all-natural ingredients and not gone overboard with the spicing.
