Silk
Love knows no borders.
Based on the Alessandro Baricco's novel this is the story of a married silkworm smuggler, Herve Joncour, in 19th Century France who travels to Japan to collect his clandestine cargo. While there he spots a beautiful European woman, the concubine of a local baron, with whom he becomes obsessed. Without speaking the same language, they communicate through letters until war intervenes. Their unrequited love persists however, and Herve's wife Helene begins to suspect.

One of my peeves is the use of meaningful looks and ponderous silences to make a film seem "deep" or "important." Truth is, Silk is simply dreary and confusing. I haven't read the book it is based on, but I suspect much of the plot and emotional background was lost in the translation to celluloid. This is a costume drama that looks good superficially, but it is the cinematic version of the emperor's new clothes.Silk - filmmaker
The preview suggests a great story and great visuals. Unfortunately, it did not measure up. Weak plot, poor choice of leading man, tedious plot progression. Costumes, that we've all seen before. There were ingredients for a reasonable film, but i would rate this 3/10. Have a nap instead.Lacking Emotion & Plot - kav2001c
2 things I feel obligated to mention up front; the movie has made huge changes from the novel, and Zips review for this dvd is nonsensical (While there he spots a beautiful European woman, the concubine of a local baron, with whom he becomes obsessed???).
The problem with this film is mainly time constraints. It has been edited down to the point where there really is no emotion left whatsoever. Unless you have read the novel you are stuck with an infuriating glimpse of what lies beneath the surface.
Herve sneaks into Japan (remember in those days foreigners werent allowed to set foot on the mainland) in order to smuggle silk worms. While there he glimpses a Japanese mistress and appears to fall in love with her. She gives him a letter saying if he doesnt return she will die.
Desppite being married Herve decides he will return to Japan again (despite warnings) and finds everything has changed.
There is alot of historical knowledge lacking in the film version, as well as a very watered down plot (both in his affair and his relation with his wife) and as a result this film is alot weaker than it should be.
