A Beautiful Film! - farquh
This film proves that simplicity rules!
Here is a romantic film about Boy meets Girl. They are perfect for each other, but the only problem is they found each other at the wrong time for romance, but the right time music.
Set in Ireland, this film was written and directed by a musician. He and film's main star used to be in a band together.
In today's day and age, we know people just aren't buying music cd's as much anymore. This film acted as a way for the two to deliver their music to a new audience. You have to admire the brilliance in that!
It is a simple story about what you do when given a chance. Sometimes we only get one!Surprisingly good musical - Jujubes
What a rare little gem! I didn't even know this existed until Kris Allen sang Falling Slowly from this movie and I decided to watch this for the music. Am I glad I did.
Both the lead actors are very talented and their music is beautiful. The story is very simple and realistic without the formulaic Hollywood happy ending which makes this even better. I bought the soundtrack after this and several songs are hauntingly good. I wish they made more movies like this. The Opposite of Die Hard - mhaslett
This movie is the opposite of so many of Hollywood's 21st-century spectacles - quiet, slow, and almost like a Broadway musical on film...just subtler. At no moment in Once do you feel like a car chase is even possible.
If the idea of a slow and meandering character study articulated by guitars and a lack of conversation doesn't sound awful, this is an incredible movie. It has all the hallmarks of a "labour of love" with deep characters portrayed by acting rookies. In fact, the acting doesn't feel like acting at all. Once is one of the "purest" feeling movies I can recall, and it might be because the actors are essentially portraying themselves (they actually are musicians, actually are a couple, actually live in Dublin, etc.). Whatever the reasons, Once is an unexciting, but magnificent and unique masterpiece that leaves you feeling lucky to have been let in on some form of secret life that most of us would never have considered.
