Queen Latifah plays a reformed drug addict who has cleaned up her act since both she and her husband were diagnosed HIV-positive years earlier. She works for an AIDS awareness group while raising her little girl, hoping against hope that her older, teenaged daughter, who knew her mother at her worst period, will someday forgive her for her past. A good opportunity for this happening is the sudden disappearance of a teenaged boy who is her daughter’s friend and is himself afflicted with both the disease and a drug problem. Latifah’s marvelous performance, in a role inspired by a real-life woman, drives this small, poignant and thoroughly moving film that educates but never becomes preachy or dry. Anne Deavere Smith is marvelous as Latifah’s exasperated but sympathetic mother.
