I wish movie reviewers would stop calling something very funny just because it has a few chuckles in it from time to time. It's very misleading! Movies like "Two Weeks", "The Great New Wonderful" (mostly crap, plus the box says it's a comedy--No way Jose!!) and "Griffin and Phoenix" (good) are not funny enough to have the word funny or comedy appear anywhere on the box, or in a critic's summary. For instance, IMDB's plot summary of "Two Weeks" says this is a bittersweet comedy. Bull-****! It's a pure drama with some splashes of humour thrown in so we don't feel like killing ourselves after it's over.
So, if you're in the mood for a well-acted but extremely sad movie, with some occasional humour mixed in from time to time, then this movie's for you. Sally Field and Julianne Nicholson (plays Sally's daughter) are the anchors of this film. The strength that both of these characters have is remarkable. That's the uplifting part. The rest is all a downer, in a good way. I saw this film get positive reviews on "Ebert and Roeper", but I don't think it ever got a theatrical release in Toronto. Luckily, it's now available on Dvd.
I enjoyed this movie but was disappointed when my ceiling starting leaking while I was watching it. The water ended up on my cheeks. The strange thing was that I didn't see a leak anywhere. Since I never cry during movies, I have to assume it was only a very tiny crack in the ceiling, that was invisible to the human eye.
