Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Woman. Warrior. Queen.
The Golden Age finds Queen Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) facing bloodlust for her throne and familial betrayal. Growing keenly aware of the changing religious and political tides of late 16th century Europe, Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish King Philip II (Jordi Molla) - with his powerful army and sea-dominating armada - determined to restore England to Catholicism.
Preparing to go to war to defend her empire, Elizabeth struggles to balance ancient royal duties with an unexpected vulnerability in her love for Raleigh. But he remains forbidden for a queen who has sworn body and soul to her country. Unable and unwilling to pursue her love, Elizabeth encourages her favorite lady-in-waiting, Bess (Abbie Cornish), to befriend Raleigh to keep him near. But this strategy forces Elizabeth to observe their growing intimacy.
As she charts her course abroad, her trusted advisor, Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush), continues his masterful puppetry of Elizabeth's court at home--and her campaign to solidify absolute power. Through an intricate spy network, Walsingham uncovers an assassination plot that could topple the throne. But as he unmasks traitors that may include Elizabeth's own cousin Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton), he unknowingly sets England up for destruction.

I saw them backwards, ELIZABETH, THE GOLDEN AGE first. I wished I hadn't, but it doesn't matter. This stands alone. She inspires us to fight the impossible... when the possible is unrevealed. All the actors, beyond Cate and Rush, everyone, fits the bill, and I felt like a sports fan pulling for my favorite team.Better than first - Pumon
Much Better than the first. The movie develops on the first Elizabeth film and takes it even further. It tells the sotry of Elizabeths rise to power and the golden ageduring the 1600's. Cate Blanchet is phenomenal in her role and takes Elizasbeths to depths that history books just cannot do it.The Golden Movie - billie
Beautiful direction, in stunning settings. Sumptuous costumes, truly spectacular, and Cate Blanchette performing - what more could you want? there may be some historical inaccuracies but this ain't history, folks, this is movieland, where the stresses are put wherever the director feels they would enhance his vision best. Mr Kapur had a divine vision here. Blanchette is the Golden Queen here, she is light and almost holy. The Spaniards are the darkness, in all ways. There is a lovely scene where mary Queen of Scots is beheaded, it is done so perfectly she might as well be a bride on her wedding day. She radiates. This is a fine entertainment, you can see the heart and soul that went into making it, and it's well worth an evening's entertainment.
