Lars and the Real Girl
The search for true love begins outside the box.
Written by Six Feet Under scribe Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl is a heartfelt comedy staring Academy-Award nominated Ryan Gosling as Lars Lindstrom, a loveable introvert whose emotional baggage has kept him from fully embracing life. After years of what is almost solitude, he invites Bianca, a friend he met on the internet to visit him. He introduces Bianca to his brother Gus (Paul Schneider) and his wife Karen (Emily Mortimer) and they are stunned. They don't know that to say to Lars or Biana - because she is a life-size doll, not a real person and he is treating her as though she is alive. They consult the family doctor Dagmar (Patricia Clarkson) who explains this is a delusion he's created - for what reason she doesn't yet know but they should al go along with it. What follows is an emotional journey for Lars and the people around him.

Lars and the Real Girl - Jude
What an incredible movie! The premise is decidedly comedic, but the story is moving and complex. This could have turned into a silly movie, but instead became a wonderful story of human growth. The acting is absolutely excellent. I cannot understand why this movie has not had more publicity.A Film Not For Everyone - sal33
Quirky, absurd, ludicrous but an excellent film.
I'm still asking myself how they pulled it off. I won't get into the story for fear of revealing spoilers but I could just imagine the pitch meeting for this film.
But the marvellous thing is it worked.
It is nice to see such a different from the Americans. They usually tend to make very standard films.Learn about real love from a plastic girl - AnnaK
So surprisingly touching and interesting, you could enjoy watching this movie with anyone, even though it's about a dude who orders a 120lb sex toy for a girlfriend. Nerdy like Napolean Dynamite, but sweet like Slumdog Millionaire. Psychological, but in a warm way, not a cold creepy way. The film doesn't have the usual rhythm (thing happens, it's happy, then something bad happens, the good guy wins, roll credits) and I love that. Ryan Gosling is so committed to the role, the whole film is a pleasure from start to finish.
