30 Days of Night
Based on the Graphic Novel
Josh Harnett (Black Dahlia, Pearl Harbor) crosses over to the dark side in this bone-chilling adaptation of the cult-hit graphic novel, brought to the screen in all its demonic glory. In a small Alaskan town, thirty days of night is a natural phenomenon. Very few outsiders visit, until a band of bloodthirsty, deathly pale vampires mark their arrival by savagely attacking sled dogs. But soon they find there are much more satisfying thirst-quenchers about: human beings. One by one, the townspeople succumb to a living nightmare, but a small group survives at least for now. The vampires use the dark to their advantage, and surviving this cold hell is a game of cat and mouse and screams.

This was truly a creepy movie, but it was really lacking in originality. And the ending was quite silly. However, go along for the ride as there are some neat twists and some great special effects. I have never been a fan of Josh Hartnell, and this movie reinforces that. He is stilted and wooden, and when he tries to 'cry' it is just embarassing. Fortunately, the movie carries itself well even with this handicap. The setting is excellent, kind of reminded me of Carpenter's The Thing and of many a Stephen King novel.Gore, guts and blood- just what the vampires ordered - movie_goer
Finally a real worthy Vampire movie.
30 Days of night has everything good quality Horror movies demand, the scary setting, blood- lots of it and of coarse a good storyline that's somewhat believable. I found the writers ambitious attempt to place the setting somewhere dark and cold was genius becauser of the harsh enviornment they were trapped in ther own hell with no where to go. It's a myth that vampires cannot withstand UV lights. Up north 30 day without sun is the perfect place to nest and feast. Everything just came together perfectly. From beginning leading up to the conclusion. I couldn't ask for anything better! I'm sure this will become a stapled classic in the near future :)113 minutes of trite - caribougrrl
Having not read the graphic novel, it's possible my expectations were too high. And I'm not certain whether blame for poor execution sits with the film makers or actors or the material they had to work with.
There was little depth or breadth in the reality of survival in the climate. As refreshing as unforgivingly-vampiric vampires are, I wanted them to be more complex. And even though I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief, and even allowing for shock, the humans seemed to have little sense of the real horror they faced. The film sat somewhere unsettlingly between a serious monster movie and a knowingly campy one.
The premise is good, very good even, but the story seems best summed up as missed opportunity. That, perhaps, is the most disappointing thing about it.
