Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace tells the inspiring story of how one man’s passion and perseverance changed the world. Based on the true life story of William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd), a leader of the British abolition movement, the film chronicles his epic struggle to pass a law to end the slave trade in the late 18th century. Along the way, Wilberforce meets intense opposition from members of Parliament who feel the slave trade is tied to the stability of the British Empire. Several friends, including Wilberforce’s minister, John Newton (Albert Finney), a reformed slave ship captain who penned the beloved hymn Amazing Grace, urge him to see the cause through.

This story was a gorgeous depiction of an important time in history. Wilberforce was a conflicted man caught between religion and politics. He ends up choosing politics on the advice of his religious mentor who used to own a slave ship. Wilberforce embarks on the biggest journey of his life which ends up being his purpose.
With the support of his wife and friends, Wilberforce was able to abolish slavery ships in the British colony.Amazing Grace - Bently
The acting the true story line is what is so amazing about this movie. It is a very sad part of our history how we have treated other human beings for profit. I am glad that there are some human beings like Wilberforce that redeem humankind by fighting for the abolition of slavery. One line that has remained with me is when the despaired ship’s captains said that we are the apes and they are the humans…this is so true. However, we have learnt nothing from history. Today we still have slavery in the form of sweat shops all over the developing world. Slavery has just taken on a different color.
Where are the Wilberforces’ of today?Great human drama - NearNorth
One thing that's always nice in movies about the slave trade is if sensitive viewers are given the idea of the horror of it all without being exposed to graphic depictions of that horror. This movie is one of those. Its main focus is the agony in a handful of isolated souls who seek and persist year after year to end the slave trade in Britain. I am not too knowledgeable of the history of it all, so the ending was a complete surprise to me and quite a delight. This is not an action movie but a deeply moving human drama pitting principle and conscience against practicality, prevailing mores and the lure of making money.
