One Element of Mystery Holds Up - c4th
SPOILER ALERT (Well maybe to some)!
Deceit may be too formulistic to provide the freshness that some seasoned viewers seek but for some it holds just enough mystery to keep ones attention and provide a small dose of sexy intrigue.
When the movie begins we find our hero being interrogated under suspicion of murder. The action occurs in flashback as he recounts facts to the police. Dave begins his story five years previous to the murder. Unrealistic as this is, it conveniently provides important background and character introduction for the viewer.
The story is essentially a PG version of Wild Things in which one or more characters manipulate another into the position of fall guy for a crime. The motivation for the crime is, of course, money and the main tactic of manipulation is, of course, sex. The formulistic plot leaves little doubt about who the antagonist is or what their motivation, plan, and methods are.
Despite using a very overdone plot in which the demise of the hero could not be more predictable, this movie does one thing very well. Throughout the movie we are never quite sure who has been murdered. Is it the seductress, her husband, dad’s old buddy, the mysterious ex-client or someone else altogether? This one element of mystery holds up against all the other transparent “unknowns” and saves this movie by keeping the viewer sufficiently engaged that even the implausible twists exposed at the end are tolerable.
