Beowulf
Director's Cut
Pride is the Curse
In a legendary time of heroes, the mighty warrior Beowulf (Ray Winstone) battles the demon Grendel and incurs the hellish wrath of the beast's ruthlessly seductive mother (Angelina Jolie). Their epic clash forges the timeless legend of Beowulf.

Surprisingly literate adult fantasy that looks like a cross between a playstation game and a Waterhouse painting. Everything here is presented in heroic proportions from the imposing soundtrack to the elaborate action sequences, which must have looked spectacular in IMAX 3D. And let’s not forget the hunky protagonists......Ray Winstone and Angelina Jolie never looked so sexy in their computer-generated bods, it’s a shame the technical crew forgot to give them genitalia. Be sure and check out the “making of” short in the extras section....very interesting.Ancient tale retold - BluEyes
This ripping yarn about a warrior hero has held up well over the centuries, though liberties have been taken with the traditional story. The film is a hybrid between live action and animation, one laid over the other -- disconcerting at first. It does take a while to warm up to the digitalized characters. However, their flaws, particularly Beowulf's, gives them depth and substance. We also appreciate the humor in the film as well as the horror. Why CGI characters? - imagination201
After hearing so much about that movie last year, I was very curious to finally see it for myself, and I must admit that I was quite disappointed...
The first question that came to my mind was... why did they turn such great actors into CGI slightly stilted characters that don't really do credits to the actor's actual talent?.. If the story had been mindblowing, that aspect of the movie would have been worth it, but seeing as the story was somewhat cliched and predictible sometimes, it kind of seemed like an overkill to turn all those real actors into fakes...
Yet, I suppose that they went well with the more videogame-like action with Grendel and the dragon of the end, but still... those two could have been more realistic-like, and the actors would have been able to dazzle us with their true talents (and not only their voices).
Malkovich's character was particularly suffering from the animation as they tried to duplicate his unique acting, but not quite managed it in the end...
All in all, a curiosity to watch, but not a movie to put on the top of your list...
