Untraceable

This movie was not very good, or should I say the hour I lost watching it! It is not very good and mumbles a lot of high tech dialogue that does not amount to anything. Diane Lane in the first 20 minutes talks about IP adresses and other technological words non stop! They then spend their time tracking a serial killer that streams his crimes on the internet. I love suspense and cop movies but this one is not very good.More than Disturbing - Stitch
Not because of the effectiveness or lack thereof of the cinematic treatment but from the implications of the subject matter. Snuff flicks are considered just about the base line of human depravity, yet here is a film that dares to suggest that we the viewing public (or at least a pitiable few of us) are not immune to their fascination. I just couldn’t discount this discomfiting thought as I watched, so it will not go down as one I enjoyed.
Having said that, at least Colin Hanks manages to stir my interest in a very minor role. Diane Lane is minimum adequate as the lead but neither she nor her assigned city detective radiate much warmth. As Filmgal noted, definitely looking a little worn around the edges. Now I realize her character is working midnights which might justify the fatigue façade but how about a little vulnerability? At least in the daughter scenes where frantic appears to substitute for concern? Either poor direction or a phoned-in performance or both.
The balance of the cast have minor impact. The villain is a little pathetic; evil doesn’t fly without a dose of charisma. Ask Anthony Hopkins a.k.a Hannibal. Finally, the Internets aspects are glossed over and must have really annoyed the professionals who were watching. Mainstream technology is a tricky field to exploit unless you exaggerate and extrapolate far enough into the future to be credible. Set this in 2020, use some neat special effects and line up a sympathetic lead…then it might fly.
There’s some success at times in generating interest in the outcome. But the hackneyed officialdom-related clichés temper it quickly for us movie mavens who’ve seen them used countless times before.
Bottom line—a predominantly dark presentation of distasteful subject matter without significant performances to redeem it. The kitten wins my most sympathetic character award; animal rights activists must be incensed.
Definitely not suitable for children.Creepy - naoj3873
I saw this movie last night and still have the heebie jeebies about it. (..and I'm a mature woman who loves horror and suspense films!) Definitely for kids over 16.
There are some graphic scenes that are pretty gory, but the creepyness comes less from that than from the sense of how many of us really DO watch tragedy at the site of an accident, or are drawn to things that impact so horrifically on others' lives. Don't want to say more because I don't want to give up any of the story line.
If you plan on going, I suggest also plan on some light and fun diversion after, you may come away from the theatre feeling just a little bit drained!
Acting is excellent, particularly Lane and Hanks.
