Exactly what De Palma is trying to say is anyone’s guess in this opportunistic, insulting and wholly gratuitous piece of crap. Even if you can ignore the film’s smug aura of moral superiority it is just poorly made.....bad editing, weak acting and a hackneyed script that is about as controversial as a youtube tantrum. Those who feel they already know the “truth” about Iraq will either overlook the film’s glaring omissions or be enraged by them. The rest of us will be left wishing we hadn’t wasted 90 minutes of our lives.Almost great - rnhaas
For the first 2/3rds to 3/4ters this is one of the best (if not the best) fictional films about the Iraq War. Yes, it is pretentious but the concept works. The only thing worth criticizing is the script, which occasionally doesn't sound entirely believable. But then Flake tells his story about his brother. Now, supposedly De Palma is trying to show us how there are no bad apples, but Flake's story portrays his family as bad apples. Unfortunately, this is not a good explanation (as we have seen with the Abhu Graib thing). The other major weakness in the "third act" is the final scene in the bar, which doesn't ring true. If Flake were less of a career criminal, this might have been a classic. An Inevitable Conclusion - kav2001c
Warning - although the film is a fictional account it does show actual scenes of death in Iraq to illustrate the horror of war.
The film deals with the psychological weardown of a unit stationed in Iraq who keeps getting redeployed instead of being sent home. The soldiers start to break down until on night they decide to commit an attrocious crime against an Iraqi civilian. Angel is the resident videographer who documents most of the story (as his attempt to break into film school) and his footage is interspersed with other film sources.
The story of death is of course foreshadowing for what is to come.
