Goya's Ghosts
From Academy Award winning director Milos Forman (1976 Best Director,One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest,1985 Best Director, Amadeus) comes an epic drama of power, passion and betrayal set during the Spanish Inquisition, Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 & 3) plays celebrated Spanish painter Francisco Goya, who's drawn into a web of deception when his muse and inspiration Ines, played by Natalie Portman (The Other Boleyn Girl, Closer), is imprisoned for heresy against the Church. Goya seeks to free her with the aid of Inquisitor Brother Lorenzo, portrayed by Javier Bardem (Collateral, Before Night Falls). Bewitched by Ines' beauty, the duplicitous monk commits the unthinkable, leaving Goya to make sense of a world gone mad.

An Intense historical Film is less about the controversial painter than it is a gripping two-part story of politics and religion.
"Goya's Ghosts remains a worthy drama that only the rare few will truly enjoy!"
While there are probably computer-generated backgrounds and armies on screen, the movie still has the feel of an old-fashioned feel. It's depict of likely events during the spanish inquisition followed by Napoleons french Revolution is equally entertaining and thought provoking. Both Natalie Portman and Javier Bardem delivers great performances that are mesmerizing and unforgettable!Fresh pickings for fans of the Spanish Inquisition - armadillo
In a magnificent send-up of Mel Brooks's famous account (cf. History Of The World, Part I) Milos Forman brings us this lively depiction of the life and times of Francisco Goya.
Populated by a cast of colorful characters there is scarcely a dull moment despite the 2-hours plus duration which ends with a display of the Spanish artist's work as the end titles roll.Excellent Period Piece... - crazoid
I found this to be a surprisingly delightful little film. I don't usually like period pieces, but I liked this one. Javier Bardem is brilliant and Natalie Portman is too. I only wish that she had more screen time. One learns that revolution only replaces one tyrant with another. And, as Einstein said, "Political swings between anarchy and tyranny are fueled by perennially rejuvenated illusions".
