The Nines
Special Edition
Ryan Reynolds (The Amityville Horror, Van Wilder) and Hope David (About Schmidt, Arlington Road) star in this clever, mind-bending thill ride through the mind of an actor, a writer and a videogame designer who arguably controls them all. Written and Directed by John August (Writer of Go and Big Fish).
The Nines consists of three short filsm, each featuring the same actors in different - and sometimes overlapping - roles. Together, three stories form a single narrative that explores the relationships between author and character, actor and role, creator and creation. Alternately funny and unsettling, The Nines is like a riddle where the answer is the questions: "How does it all add up?"

True metaphysical thrillers are rare, but this one is more so because it actually contains a satisfying plot. Structured in three parts, the film cleverly examines quantum theories (potential of a multi-verse) and what it might be like to be God.
By the time the credits roll it is easy to think of this as a cerebral version of THE MATRIX--which should please those who value philosophical ideas as highly as cool stunts and special effects.
It scores mainly well because there is so little of its kind to compare it to.Down with Ryan Reynolds - movie_goer
I place Ryan Reynolds in the same class of actors like Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn there hot mess's who can't act, but think they can. It's a mystery in hollywood how they survive. The Nines is also a hot mess from start to finish, i'm not quiet sure what i'm watching. Is he dellusional? or is it the audience being tricked into someones night of getting high then writing a script and sucking our pockets and time dry with this bad script? Already i'm at fault for wasting to much time as is in this fallen bad whatever...movie. If you can call it that?!99 minute mess! - PFHLTB
The real mystery here is why this film was made. I defy you to sit through it. I didn't mind the scenes with Hope Davis, but there is no plot to speak of. It's a complete mess and a waste of time. The entire film plays more like a bunch of deleted scenes pasted together.
So, what is this movie about? Well, it's about 94 minutes too long (99 minute total running time - get it, 9-9). The five minutes that I didn't hate, involved one of the Hope Davis scenes where she sings and tries to seduce Ryan Reynolds' character. It was nothing great, but since the rest of this mess was totally unforgettable, it did stand out, at least slightly.
If you've zipped this disaster, maybe you'll get lucky and it will arrived cracked. Yuck!
Special Features:
The 10 min short film "God" (also by John August) was actually better than "The Nines." It was filmed in 1999 and deals with a woman's relationship with God, over the phone. It was cute, original and perhaps the only reason to put this DVD into your DVD player. There is even a director/cast commentary for it. GRADE: B
Deleted Scenes: As dull as the movie itself. The alternate ending was also too similar and useless. It would have been better if they included an alternate movie instead of just an alternate ending.
Making of: It's interesting that Hope Davis didn't mind the confusing plot and thought it was nice that everything wasn't explained, but I strongly disagree with her.
The two audio commentaries are rather dull, but it was interesting to hear that Ryan Reynolds found the script so interesting that he couldn't put it down. Maybe he was doing drugs at the time because I can't understand how he got past page one.
