Exquisitely stupid epic. I’ve never seen such a ratio between high production values and stupidity. There were domesticated mammoths, pyramids, martial arts, intelligent sabre tooth tigers, and raptors. Hunter–Gatherers all looked like perfectly shaved models and had commando style fighting skills and could throw spears hundreds of feet. Well, the record javelin throw is about 90 metres, so I guess 2 or 3 hundred feet is possible. But this thing was a heavy fighting spear and went way beyond that. No way! Tribes could summons hundreds of warriors and African tribes interacted with European. We couldn't even catch all the stupidities.
Omar Sharif was in it. He was an actor known for playing urbane and sophisticated Arabs back in the 60's. I think he was such a person himself. Certainly he is a world class bridge player, writing texts on the subject, so he's plenty smart. Why would he get involved in such a thing?
I felt stupid for enjoying it. But I did. It occurred to me that most of the stupidities could have been eliminated by placing the setting on some other planet or alternate reality.
The villains of the piece hid themselves from view and claimed to be Gods. Occasionally the Director would show little peaks of a hideous body part. We speculated that they were aliens. I suppose that wouldn't have worked if set on another planet or reality.
Spoiler Alert!
Turns out the villains were just old. So apparently old people are the stuff of horror now. Another stupidity.Pathetic!!!! - SuperT
The only reason I gave it 2 stars was the CGI depiction of prehistoric beasts (Ex Saber Tooth, Mammoth,). Aside from that, this movie was a painful disappointment! After approximately 27 years after Quest For Fire, a small budget film that addressed the prehistoric era, 10000 BC was expected to thrill viewers with all the technical big budget advantages that Quest For Fire did not have. Instead, the viewer was bombarded with nauseating cliches and lackluster acting. Even more insulting, was the sporting of dreadlocks to define the indigenous people of that time (Overly simplistic!!!) The only good feeling I had during this hackneyed mush was the feeling of relief of not paying approximately $20.00 to see this in the theater.Good, but used up story - EZGoing
How many times can you re-use the same story? that is the question. Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie, I think it was good, but there was only this one bitter disappointment I had : Déjà vu.
Let's do a little alchemy:
- let's change the time to, hmmm, say 900AD
- let's change the location to South America
- let's modify a tribal neolitic people to Mayans
and VOILA!! you've just got Apocalypto.
Essentially, a peaceful hunter tribe, who finds scared refugee(s) who announce that bad guys are not far behind, get attacked by said bad guys, which make them prisoners, to ultimately bring them to a mighty and powerful people who like slaves and sacrifices. In the meantime, some guy who was not at the settlement at the time of said attack follows the bad guys, and eventually frees and/or avenge his people.
Here... I just described both movies.
Just to push it a little further, the hero in Apocalypto is 'the one who runs with the jaguar' and the hero in 10000bc is 'the one who speak to the "spear tooth" tiger.
I mean please... some creativity here!
