As a person who has read the original book, seen the old movie and now seen this one - I loved this movie. The new technology and modernization of a truely enjoyable story was pretty aweseome to see - plus the movie was much longer than most so it got quite indepth which added a lot more to the plot line than most movies have. Very worth watchingStick to the book. - Cottser
I've now had the complete Andromeda Strain experience. Read the book, watched the 1971 film, and now this 2008 television miniseries.
This modern adaptation wisely upped the drama from the comparably stale 1971 version. The 1971 film had its moments, but overall I found it to be very long-winded and sometimes downright irritating, especially after having read the book.
That's not to say that this 2008 miniseries is perfect. It still leaves much to be desired, but the writers did a pretty good job of adapting it to the 21st century. The story is more complex, so it's not a total bore if you've already read the book (or seen the film, for that matter). They introduce the possibility of a journalistic leak, we see more of the politics behind the story, and they don't spend as long on the whole decontamination thing :)
Having said all that, I would recommend the book if anything. It's short, and allows a much better look at the science behind all this. If you are looking for something to watch, I would say stick to this version unless you're a real big fan of old sci-fi movies.stick to the original - agent_aardvark
I watched this when it first aired on A&E. Its very "made for t.v." My meaning is it's pretty cheap and not very good.
The names Ridley Scott and Tony Scott are above the title, but don't let that fool you. It's only "Presented" by Ridley and Tony Scott, - what ever that means. Its directed by Mikael Salomon, who's made a few good films. This isn't one of them.
This version has a couple of good scenes, when our heroes explore an infected town or watch a doomed fighter jet. Alas the good scenes are few and far between. Definitely not enough to warrant watching the other 3 hours of this bland re-make. The race against time ending is so ridiculous its practically unwatchable.
Stick to the 1971 original, its a classic.
