The Promotion
Two guys. One job. No rules.
Two mid-level Chicago supermarket employees - Doug (Seann William Scott) and Richard (John C. Reilly), a dubious new guy from Canada - compete ruthlessly for a coveted managerial post at a new store location. Doug and Richard could not be more different, but going head-to-head in a contest of wits and will reveals how they have more in common than they once suspected. The duo battle toward a hilarious final showdown that will leave you guessing until the very end.

What an interesting film. No, it isn't fast paced, but that is what makes it interesting. Nor is it slap stick funny, instead it offers a humour that makes you smile and think. I liked John C. Reilly's character, very unsuspecting. Two men who are at different stages in their life and don't even share similar backgrounds are up for the same position. The compete against each other even though really they do share a strange respect for each other at the same time. Their superiors at work often try to pit them against each other which allows the characters to take several turns in their treatment of the other. I liked the twists to the story, and the human struggle that the characters experienced. These men often find themselves in situations that put them ahead at the expense of their rival, but at what costs. How far will you go to get what you want? Of course the reference to Canada is always nice to hear and contributes to the quiet mirth of this film.funny - nasu
This movie was surprisingly very enjoyable. The two main characters are so serious and driven about the promotion, but the joke is that it's a battle over a grocery position. Very well done, lots of clever subtlety. Makes me thankful I don't work in a grocery store. I liked it a lot.Weak overall - eoguy
Trying to chose movies outside the “box” can often be a difficult task. The summary seemed to indicate a smart and funny premise but it simply wasn’t pulled off.
The humor was dry and the acting stiff. It’s a typical movie with an easy to guess ending which is probably why it didn’t make it to the movies. This is one of those movies that opened on a handful of screens (at best) and then went straight to DVD.
Sean William Scott would be better suited focusing on buddy comedies. John C. Reilly seems to be saying "yes" to any script that rolls past his desk.
