Tkaronto
Two people meet... and find themselves.
Ray (Duane Murray) and Jolene (Melanie McLaren) discover an unexpected connection when their paths’ cross in Tkaronto (the original Mohawk word for "Toronto"). Through their chance meeting they reveal their hopes, dreams, fears and failures, and realize their common struggle: to stake claim to their urban Aboriginal identity.

Tkaronto is a brave film in the sense that it eschews the well-trod Hollywood arc in its look at identity, attraction and love.
Ray and Jolene are both working artists in Toronto for a short spell of time. As happens so often when one travels, they establish a bond quickly and make a space with each other to openly examine their lives.
The film is honest, funny, and, in the end, honourable --- a difficult thing to do in an age when cynicism is so prevalent in our entertainment culture.Slow but Canadian - pezliz
A very Canadian look at life at a turning point. Tkaronto is two Aborginal Canadians (one Metis, one First Nations) holding on to what they know of their heritage, much like many Canadians of varied backgrounds find themselves doing.
The film has lovely cinematography, but tends to move a little too slow in parts - but in the end, you need the pauses to absorb the feeling of the story.nice little gem - rogerb666
In an emotional, low-budget first feature, Shane Belcourt portrays two dangerously compatible thirtysomethings sharing a house in Toronto, both of whom are forced to confront their individualities the further they pursue a friendship. At the centre of their dilemma, they find difficulty expressing their mutual Canadian Aboriginal background in careers that demand them to do so. Tkaronto asks questions of cultural identity in a subtly investigatory manner that seduces and charms its audience.
In the wake of a screwed-up awards season ((Slumdog Millionaire), Tkaronto pays mind to its modest Canadiana, where remarkable films are made and not often enough seen.
