I didn't really expect much of this, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was wacky and outlandish, but didn't take itself seriously and there were some truly funny scenes and lines so I was kept entertained. Yes, perhaps they took on too much, but I got some good laughs, and the final scene and songs really had some classics.Funny with a lot of missteps - meghanrose
This movie definitely requires a certain sense of humour - not everyone is going to laugh at a Grease-inspired Rock Me Sexy Jesus song, no matter how toe-tapping catchy it is. If you're already smiling at the idea of a Rock Me Sexy Jesus song, then perhaps this is the film for you.
The movie is uneven. At times, it's hard to decide whether it's parodying high school inspirational teacher flicks, an homage to them, or trying to become one. The editting is sloppy and Catherine Keener is dangerously underused, but the movie made me laugh more than once, so I'm willing to overlook some of the problems.Mostly "Not to be" - Mookie
The true test for a comedy is - did I laugh? Yes, but only in the third act and not enough to make me recommend this movie. Co-Written by one of the writers of South Park I could see where they wanted to go with the comedy but they just didn't make it there. They basically wanted to do a send up of all those "teacher reaches out to under achievers and gets them to rise to new heights" but they need to go even more over the top than they did or have some better characters to bounce the funny off of.
The third act - when they are putting on the play - actually works quite well but it is too little too late. The same goes with Amy Poeler coming in the third act - we needed more characters like her in the movie. Over the top characters.
It's a shame. There is a good idea in there but the lack of funny characters - playing it too straight - and a horrible side story with the wife - kill the momentum and kill the comedy.
