My daughter and I were huge fans of Noel Streatfield's novels when my daughter was young. I admit to being apprehensive about viewing a movie based on our favourite -- but I need not have been. The DVD is beautifully true to the book, and also stands on its own as a very fine movie. I think young dancers would relate to this, even as old-fashioned and stuffy as it might be compared to more modern fare. Well-acted and expertly directed. Bravo!Charming - MamaRuby
As someone who has not read the book, there was no disappointment for me in any dissimilarities between the print & film versions. I must say that I rented the movie mainly because of Emma Watson, not being familiar with the book at all. Although I can't fault her acting, I must agree with another reviewer who felt she was too old to play the role.
This is a film that will appeal to those who have enjoyed movies/books like Anne of Green Gables or Little Women. It has strong female characters, high moral standards, and girls who are encouraged to be educated and trained in order that they shouldn't be dependent on marrying well to secure their future.
The girls are not perfect angels. They do show selfishness and they have their peevish moments. Their lives as performers reveal the difficulties, more than the glamour, of being a child actor or dancer. Their reactions to the challenges they encounter range from self-centered pique, to fear of failure, to genuine self-sacrifice. A thread woven through the entire film shows that one's fortune is won both through taking chances and working hard, and through the kindness of benefactors who see that they can open doors for a deserving youth.
This film has given me a very good reason to go check the book out of the library, and to investigate the whole series of "Shoes" books in fact! Not what I'd hoped for - AnneMcG
There's more than enough material in the book Ballet Shoes to fill a movie of this length. Why, then, is there so much in this movie that isn't in the book? Someday, perhaps, someone will produce a version for all of us who grew up loving this story, but this isn't it.
